How To Cook Rice

Getting back to the basics is never a bad idea. If you are new to the kitchen, maybe this is the first time you have ever tried to cook rice. Everyone has to start somewhere. Whether you are a seasoned chef or a Do-It-Yourself cook learning to fend for yourself on the stove, here is a simple way to cook your rice.

Put water in a pot, bring to a boil, and add a little salt
Generally you will want 1 3/4 cups of water for every 1 cup of rice. Put the water in a medium sized pot (ideally with a  lid), then bring the water to a boil. As the water heats up, mix in some salt to add a bit of flavor. 1 teaspoon per 1 cup of rice should be sufficient.

Add the rice
I would explain this step, but that may just be obnoxious.

Disrupt the rice
Using a spatula or cooking spoon, disturb the rice to make sure you separate any large clumps of rice and ensure none is sticking to the bottom of the pot. Make sure you do not stir too much. Too much disruption can cause the rice to become very sticky.

Cover the pot and bring to a simmer
Make sure you have a lid that fits the pot. Reduce heat to very low and let the water and rice simmer. Let simmer for 15-20 minutes. Then remove from heat and let the rice continue to steep for another 5-7 minutes.

Fluff that rice!
Once ready to serve, use a fork to fluff the rice and separate the grains as necessary.

Pro Tip: Although tempting, do not remove the cover while the rice is cooking! If you do, you may overcook the rice and it will become mushy. Be patient!

And that is it! You have successfully boiled some rice! What’s next? If you are stuck on the basics, maybe you are looking to boil some eggs? Whatever it is you are cooking next, have fun with it!

And as always:
